Kiandutu, a slum nestled on the outskirts of Thika town, may appear inconspicuous, but beneath its congested streets lies a world where every young person is a potential suspect. It’s a place where newcomers find themselves isolated, and where a lone traveler may easily become a victim of theft.

The Untold Story
One fateful day, on January 10, 2022, curiosity led me to explore the depths of Kiandutu. Little did I know the perilous journey I was embarking on. As I ventured further into the slum, a stranger called out my name, though it wasn’t mine to claim. Regrettably, I didn’t respond.
Unbeknownst to me, a trio of men on motorbikes began tailing me. They swiftly closed in, and one of them, with a menacing demand, forced me to surrender my phone and wallet. My resistance was met with a painful blow to the forehead, and in my anguish, I gave in. They even took my shoes.
As they vanished into the labyrinthine alleys, I cried out for help, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. In Kiandutu, it seems that everyone is a potential thief, and in such a world, thieves do not assist each other. I later learned that these thieves carry knives, ready to use them if their victims resist.

My ordeal left me shaken and desperate. As I approach the two-year anniversary of this harrowing experience, I feel compelled to share my story. Kiandutu demands a toll for those who venture within its confines – be prepared to leave something valuable behind.
This cautionary tale underscores the hidden dangers of Kiandutu, a place where danger lurks around every corner, and where survival may come at a high cost.
