Tragic Loss of Turkish Soldiers in Anti-Terror Operation in Northern Iraq

1–2 minutes

In a somber development, three Turkish soldiers lost their lives during Türkiye’s ongoing anti-terror operation in northern Iraq, as reported by the Turkish National Defence Ministry. The soldiers, Necdet Calis and Emrah Gunduz, were martyred, while two others sustained injuries in an attack by members of a separatist terrorist organization within Türkiye’s Operation Claw-Lock zone. Regrettably, one of the wounded soldiers later succumbed to his injuries.

While the specific affiliation of the attackers was not disclosed in the official statement, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is known to be active in the region. Türkiye initiated Operation Claw-Lock in April of the previous year with the aim of targeting PKK hideouts in the Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions of northern Iraq, situated near the Turkish border.

This operation followed two earlier military campaigns, Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle, launched in 2020 to eradicate terrorists hiding in northern Iraq who were planning cross-border attacks in Türkiye. The Turkish government has consistently asserted its commitment to combating the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union.

The PKK, in its more than 35-year-long terror campaign against Türkiye, has caused the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The organization’s activities have resulted in a protracted and tragic conflict in the region, with Türkiye facing ongoing security challenges.

The loss of these three soldiers underscores the high human cost associated with Türkiye’s efforts to counter terrorism and protect its citizens. The government has expressed its determination to continue the fight against terror threats, emphasizing the need for international cooperation in addressing the broader issue of terrorism in the region.

As the nation mourns the sacrifice of these brave soldiers, attention is drawn to the complexities and challenges surrounding counter-terrorism operations, particularly in regions where extremist groups operate. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Türkiye and other nations in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability.
