In a crucial Security Council meeting on Friday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the critical state of the Israel-Hamas conflict, stating, “we are at a breaking point.” Guterres urged the Security Council to advocate for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire, expressing deep concern for the people of Gaza who he said are “looking into the abyss.”
Despite the plea, the United States utilized its veto power, thwarting the council’s attempt to demand an immediate cessation of hostilities. Guterres stressed the urgency, stating, “The international community must do everything possible to end their ordeal.” The veto raises questions about the diplomatic dynamics surrounding the ongoing conflict and the challenges of achieving consensus on a path towards peace.
