Geneva: U.N. Secretary-General Urges Swift Resumption of Funding for Palestinian Relief Agency Amidst Controversy

1–2 minutes

In a call on Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for the immediate restoration of funding for the U.N.’s Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA. The urgency stems from the desperate need for assistance among Gaza’s displaced people. However, the call for funding comes at a critical juncture, as the U.N. is currently investigating the alleged involvement of a dozen aid workers in October’s Hamas attack on Israel.

Guterres emphasized the dire consequences of inadequate funding, warning that aid for over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza could be scaled back as early as February 1. Among the countries that halted payments for UNRWA’s $1.6 billion annual budget, the United States is notable. The decision to cease funding came after the identification of 12 Palestinian relief workers accused of aiding in the militants’ attack, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people.

Addressing the severity of the situation, Guterres stated, “The abhorrent alleged acts of these staff members must have consequences,” noting the possibility of criminal prosecution. Nine of the aid workers were promptly terminated, one was confirmed dead, and officials are working to ascertain the identities of the remaining two.

Despite the controversy, Guterres underscored the importance of distinguishing between the actions of a few individuals and the broader humanitarian efforts of the UNRWA staff. He urged against penalizing the tens of thousands of men and women working for UNRWA, many of whom operate in perilous conditions. The Secretary-General emphasized that the critical needs of the populations they serve must be met, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian aid in challenging circumstances.

The situation remains tense as the international community grapples with balancing accountability for alleged wrongdoing with the imperative to continue vital humanitarian support for the Palestinian population in Gaza.
