Washington: U.S. Launches Airstrikes in the Middle East in Retaliation for Fatal Drone Attack

1–2 minutes

In a decisive move, the United States has initiated airstrikes in the Middle East as a retaliatory measure against the fatal drone attack on an American base in Jordan last Sunday. The strikes, carried out by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, targeted Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups in Iraq and Syria.

CENTCOM revealed in a statement on Friday that U.S. military forces successfully hit more than 85 targets using a variety of aircraft, including long-range bombers flown from the United States. The strikes focused on key installations, such as “command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities” of the implicated militia groups and their IRGC sponsors.

The decision to launch these airstrikes follows the tragic incident at the American base in Jordan, which resulted in the first American deaths under fire in what is described by some as an escalating proxy war with Iranian-supported militias in the region. President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and other U.S. government officials had made it clear in recent days that there would be a multi-tiered military response to such attacks.

The airstrikes signify a strategic and forceful response by the United States, reflecting its commitment to protecting its personnel and interests in the face of escalating tensions in the Middle East. As the situation unfolds, global attention will remain focused on the evolving dynamics in the region and the potential consequences of these military actions on international relations.
