In a significant development, President Joe Biden announced on Friday that he had ordered military strikes on facilities in Iraq and Syria linked to groups responsible for the recent fatal drone attack on a U.S. base in Jordan. The strikes, conducted by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, targeted Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups.
According to CENTCOM’s statement, the U.S. military hit more than 85 targets using various aircraft, including long-range bombers flown from the United States. The strikes focused on disrupting the operations of the designated targets, including “command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities.”
The military action comes in response to the drone attack on an American base in Jordan last Sunday, which resulted in fatalities. The U.S. government attributed the attack to militia groups and their IRGC sponsors who have been implicated in previous assaults against U.S. and coalition forces in the region.
President Biden emphasized that the response to these attacks would continue, signaling a commitment to addressing threats to U.S. forces and interests in the Middle East. The airstrikes aimed to degrade the capabilities of the targeted groups and deter future attacks, marking a decisive move by the U.S. administration in the face of escalating tensions in the region.
As the situation unfolds, global attention will be closely focused on the evolving dynamics in the Middle East and the repercussions of these military actions on regional stability. The U.S. government’s decisive response underscores its commitment to protecting its personnel and interests in the face of threats emanating from the region.
