In a significant move to bolster the teaching of the Russian language in Syria, the Syrian and Russian Ministries of Education have jointly introduced a new curriculum tailored specifically for Syrian students. The initiative marks a deepening of educational ties between the two nations, reflecting the growing interest in Russian language studies within Syria.
The newly developed curriculum is the result of extensive collaboration between educational committees from both countries. Aimed at students in grade 7 and above, the textbooks have been carefully crafted to be more accessible and practical for Syrian learners. This effort was spearheaded by the Christian World Union in Moscow, which delivered the first batch of 5,000 textbooks to the Syrian Ministry of Education. Of these, 1,000 copies will be used on a trial basis in select provinces, including Damascus, Homs, Suwaida, Latakia, and Tartous—regions with the highest concentration of Russian language learners.
The introduction of these new textbooks addresses concerns over the inadequacy of previous materials, which were not deemed practical for effective teaching. “The books that were delivered to Syrian students previously weren’t practical for teaching, so our mission was to create a co-authored book that would be easier to learn and more commonly used, which needed joint efforts from both sides,” said Alexei Chorkezov, president of the Christian World Union.
The decision to implement these textbooks reflects a growing trend in Syria, where approximately 39,000 students are currently studying Russian. This shift is indicative of the increasing importance of Russian in the region, not just as a language of diplomacy and business, but also as a critical skill for future generations of Syrians.
The trial period will be closely monitored, and based on its success, an additional 5,000 copies of the textbooks are planned for distribution next year. This initiative underscores the commitment of both Syrian and Russian educational authorities to enhance the quality of language education, fostering stronger cultural and educational ties between the two nations.
