Beirut, Lebanon – September 1, 2024
Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, has strongly condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of pursuing a deliberate strategy aimed at the fragmentation of the West Asian region. Speaking on Saturday, Berri underscored the essential need for unwavering support for the Palestinian people amid what he described as Israel’s “genocidal war.”

Berri stated that the Israeli cabinet, led by Netanyahu, is committed to breaking up the region into fragmented entities, with the ultimate goal of establishing Israel as the dominant power in West Asia. “The Israeli cabinet led by [Benjamin] Netanyahu is dogged to break up the region into pieces and create a situation where Israel is the strongest entity. We must stand by Gaza, back the Palestinian nation’s legitimate right to establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and stop the ongoing massacres in Gaza above all else,” Berri emphasized.

The Lebanese Speaker did not mince words when addressing the Israeli administration’s role in the current crisis. He accused the Netanyahu government of deliberately sabotaging any initiatives aimed at bringing an end to the violence in Gaza. According to Berri, the actions of the Israeli government amount to a series of unprecedented war crimes against the Palestinian people in the besieged coastal territory.

Berri further claimed that Netanyahu’s policies are driven by an extremist ideology that views the lives of non-Jews, particularly Palestinians, as expendable. He referenced a controversial saying often attributed to certain extremist circles within Zionism: “The best among the Gentiles deserves to be killed,” suggesting that this phrase forms the ideological basis for Israel’s harsh actions in Gaza.

The Lebanese legislator argued that Israel’s military operations in Gaza are not merely acts of war but are part of a broader strategy to alter the region’s demographic and geographical landscape. He described these actions as a “deliberate attempt by the Zionist regime to change the geographical makeup of the region.”

Berri’s comments come at a time of escalating tensions and violence in Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have led to significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction. The conflict, which has drawn international condemnation, has sparked protests and calls for action across the world, particularly in the Arab and Muslim-majority countries.

In his remarks, Berri called on the international community, particularly Arab and Muslim nations, to intensify their support for the Palestinian cause. He stressed the importance of not only providing humanitarian aid to Gaza but also backing the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

“The situation in Gaza is a catastrophe that cannot be ignored. It is imperative that we, as a region and as a global community, stand together to halt the atrocities being committed against the Palestinian people and ensure that their legitimate rights are upheld,” Berri concluded.

As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, Berri’s call for solidarity with the Palestinians adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding an end to the violence and a renewed focus on achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.
