The Gaza-based Palestinian resistance group, Islamic Jihad, issued a stark warning to the Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, denouncing the ongoing military offensive in the occupied West Bank. The group condemned what it described as a delusional belief by Israel in its capacity to seize control and annex the West Bank, emphasizing that such efforts would meet fierce resistance.
The statement, released on Tuesday, comes in the wake of a large-scale Israeli military operation in the West Bank, particularly targeting the cities of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. This operation, dubbed “Camps of Summer,” marks the largest Israeli military action in the region in over two decades, involving extensive troop deployments and airstrikes.
Islamic Jihad criticized the international and Arab silence in response to the Israeli offensive, accusing these parties of enabling continued aggression. The group described the situation as dire, with the Israeli military committing a range of war crimes, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and the demolition of homes. According to Islamic Jihad, Jenin has been particularly hard hit, with over 70 percent of its infrastructure damaged since the operation began.
The resistance group vowed that just as they have resisted Israeli occupation in Gaza, they will continue to do so in the West Bank. They also accused the Netanyahu administration of advancing a broader agenda to annex the West Bank and potentially build a synagogue on the site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a move that would likely provoke further unrest.
Islamic Jihad further pointed to a recent statement by Israeli far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who announced plans to construct a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem. This announcement has drawn widespread condemnation across the Islamic world and heightened tensions in the region.
The resistance movement contended that Israel’s ongoing military aggression is part of a premeditated strategy aimed at altering the demographics of the West Bank, which they argue threatens the stability of neighboring regions, including Jordan and the Gulf states.
As the conflict continues, Islamic Jihad criticized Netanyahu for refusing to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, suggesting that the Israeli leader is attempting to buy time in hopes of achieving broader territorial ambitions in both Gaza and the West Bank.
The death toll from Israel’s military actions in Gaza has surpassed 40,780 Palestinians, with tens of thousands more injured. Amid this devastating toll, Islamic Jihad called on the Palestinian Authority to reassess its strategies and alliances, warning that relying on international and Arab support might prove futile.
In closing, Islamic Jihad reiterated its commitment to resisting Israeli occupation and warned that any attempt to impose Israeli control over the West Bank would be met with fierce and determined opposition.
