Tehran – The Iranian government has issued a forceful condemnation of Israel’s recent wave of airstrikes across Syria, accusing the regime of systematically targeting the nation’s defensive, economic, and civil infrastructure to destabilize and dominate the region.

In a statement released Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei strongly denounced what he described as “a deliberate campaign of aggression” by Israel, aimed at weakening Syria’s sovereignty and hindering its role as an independent actor in West Asia.
“It is clear to everyone that the main goal of the occupying regime is to destroy and eliminate the defensive, economic, and infrastructural capabilities of Syria as an independent country,” Baghaei said. “This is to ensure Israel can pursue its malicious interests in this country and the region.”
Series of Strikes Across Syria
The condemnation follows a spate of Israeli airstrikes that targeted military and civilian sites across several Syrian provinces including Damascus, Latakia, Idlib, Hama, Quneitra, and Dara’a. According to local journalists, at least 20 airstrikes were recorded on Friday night alone, with Israeli warplanes reportedly hitting strategic warehouses and installations in the countryside of Damascus, Dara’a, and Hama.
Earlier the same day, Israeli jets launched missiles near the Syrian presidential palace in Damascus, in what marked the second attack on Syrian territory within the same week.
Linking Syria, Palestine, and Lebanon
Baghaei also connected the Israeli aggression in Syria to the broader regional crisis, including the ongoing genocide in occupied Palestine and Israel’s expanding military footprint in Lebanon. “The Israeli attacks are not isolated; they are part of a coordinated strategy to weaken all centers of resistance and independence in the region,” he noted.

Call for Global Intervention
Reiterating Iran’s unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty, Baghaei urged regional powers and the broader international community to intervene. He emphasized that a “swift and effective” response was required to curb Israel’s “warmongering and lawless behavior.”
“The Organization of Islamic Cooperation must activate existing diplomatic and legal mechanisms to pressure the United Nations Security Council to take meaningful action against Israel’s violations of international law,” he said.
After Assad
The statement comes at a time of increasing uncertainty in Syria following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Since then, the country has experienced an escalation in Israeli airstrikes, with large portions of southern Syria reportedly under occupation.
Military infrastructure linked to the former Syrian army has been a primary target. Despite efforts by various actors, including HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, to seek coexistence with Israel, Tel Aviv continues its aggressive posture.
As Israel intensifies its operations and regional tensions rise, Iran’s call for international accountability underscores the fragile state of Syria and the growing risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Whether global and regional institutions will act to curb this violence remains an open question.
