Iran Condemns U.S. Airstrikes on Yemen as War Crimes, Cites Civilian Deaths and UN Inaction

Tehran, May 3, 2025 — Iran has strongly condemned the recent wave of U.S. airstrikes on Yemen, calling the attacks a blatant violation of international law and accusing Washington of committing war crimes. The denunciation comes in the wake of a deadly U.S. strike on a detention center in Yemen’s Sa’ada province, which reportedly killed nearly 70 inmates—most of them African migrants—and injured over 50 others.

Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, labeled the attacks as “a clear violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Speaking on Friday night, Baghaei said the strikes targeted vital civilian infrastructure and residential areas, contravening the principles of the United Nations Charter and established norms of international law.

“These acts are not only military aggression,” Baghaei stated, “they are war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The airstrikes, launched under the pretext of targeting Houthi-aligned militants, have sparked international outcry, especially after reports confirmed that the detention facility struck on Monday primarily housed African migrants seeking refuge.

The spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, echoed concerns over the humanitarian toll. “These airstrikes pose a growing risk to the civilian population in Yemen, including women and children,” Dujarric warned.

Iran also criticized what it termed the “shameful silence” of the United Nations and the UN Security Council. “The inaction of global institutions in the face of U.S. violations only emboldens further aggression,” Baghaei said.

In addition to condemning the strikes in Yemen, Baghaei linked U.S. actions to broader regional instability. He referenced ongoing Israeli military campaigns in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as attacks on southern Lebanon, accusing the United States and Israel of orchestrating a strategy of chaos in the region.

“The repeated U.S. attacks and Zionist regime’s terrorist actions are deepening insecurity in West Asia,” he warned. “It is time for regional states to unite and confront this aggression collectively.”

The Ansarullah movement in Yemen—commonly known as the Houthis—also blasted the strike, describing it as a “brutal crime” deliberately targeting civilians under the guise of anti-terror operations.

With mounting casualties and deteriorating infrastructure, Yemen’s humanitarian crisis—already the worst in the world—is spiraling further into catastrophe. Aid groups and rights organizations are calling for an immediate halt to airstrikes and the establishment of international accountability mechanisms.

As diplomatic tensions flare, Iran’s sharp condemnation marks a significant escalation in rhetoric against the U.S., setting the stage for increased geopolitical friction in an already volatile region.
