Moscow Accuses Zelensky of Issuing “Direct Threat” Over May 9 Victory Day Celebrations

Moscow, May 4 – Russia has condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent remarks regarding the security of Victory Day celebrations on May 9, calling them a “direct threat” and likening them to the rhetoric of an “international terrorist.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in a statement to Sputnik, responded sharply to Zelensky’s comment that he “does not guarantee security on May 9 on the territory of Russia,” interpreting the remark as an intentional threat timed ahead of the country’s most symbolically important holiday.

“After every terrorist attack on Russian territory, the Kiev regime, its security services, and Zelensky personally boast that it was their doing and that they will continue doing it,” Zakharova stated.
“Therefore, the phrase that he ‘does not guarantee security on May 9’ is, of course, a direct threat.”

Zakharova also said the Ukrainian president’s comments were not spontaneous or misinterpreted but “deliberate and carefully calculated.” She accused Zelensky of intentionally escalating tensions around the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War, a day Russia commemorates with major military parades and international diplomacy.

“The statements that Zelensky has now made are not accidental. This is a classic threat of an international terrorist,” she said.
“That is exactly why the head of Bankova [Ukraine’s Presidential Office], in one interview, rejected a ceasefire proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and unequivocally threatened world leaders planning to arrive in Moscow.”

According to Zakharova, the rejection of Putin’s call for a temporary truce during the Victory Day period and the refusal to assure safety for visiting dignitaries signals what she described as “state-sanctioned extremism.”

She further alleged that Zelensky’s government has exported its methods beyond Ukraine’s borders, citing incidents in Mali and other regions.

“Zelensky spread his foreign experience in terrorism to other continents through extremist actions in different countries,” she claimed.

Zelensky, in a separate comment, reaffirmed that Kyiv would not accept a temporary ceasefire, suggesting that any such pause would only benefit Russia militarily. He also maintained that his administration cannot ensure the safety of foreign leaders attending Moscow’s Victory Day parade, reinforcing concerns already raised by security experts about potential escalation.

As tensions between Moscow and Kyiv continue to intensify, the Victory Day celebrations—which once symbolized global unity against fascism—now appear to be shadowed by sharp diplomatic clashes and mounting security threats.
