Pakistan Warns of Retaliation Amid Fears of Imminent Indian Military Strike, Cites ‘Credible Intel’

ISLAMABAD – May 4, 2025

Tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan have escalated sharply, with Islamabad warning that it possesses “credible information” pointing to an imminent Indian military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours, according to Pakistan’s Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Dunya TV, Minister Tarar reiterated that “if India attacks, it will meet a befitting response,” echoing Pakistan’s longstanding stance on regional security and its readiness to defend itself. He emphasized that Pakistan’s Armed Forces, under the leadership of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, are on high alert and fully prepared for any confrontation.

The warning follows the recent terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India has blamed on Pakistan-based groups — an accusation Pakistan firmly denies. Tarar, while dismissing India’s allegations, said New Delhi is suffering from “diplomatic embarrassment on the global stage,” and claimed that “Pakistan is effectively presenting its case to the international community.”

In a firm rebuttal to Indian actions, Tarar called the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty — a landmark water-sharing agreement brokered by the World Bank in 1960 — an “unprovoked and reckless move”, branding it as “childish” and a threat to regional stability. “Pakistan won’t brook India’s suspension of the water treaty,” he asserted, stating that the decision violates international norms and jeopardizes the water security of millions.

In response, Pakistan has taken its own countermeasures, including:

  • Suspension of visas issued to Indian nationals
  • Closure of its airspace to Indian airlines
  • Shutting down the Wagah-Attari border crossing

Tarar also confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been in direct communication with allies such as China and Saudi Arabia to highlight what Islamabad calls “India’s provocative posture” and to seek diplomatic backing against any possible aggression. He further announced that Pakistani delegations are being dispatched worldwide to brief foreign governments on “India’s aggression and state-sponsored terrorism.”

Despite the rising tensions, international bodies, including the United Nations, as well as regional players, have urged both countries to show restraint and resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. However, both New Delhi and Islamabad continue to trade accusations and tighten security postures, raising fears of a possible cross-border military escalation.

As the standoff continues to draw global concern, analysts warn that any military miscalculation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors could have catastrophic consequences for South Asia and beyond.
