MOSCOW – May 4, 2025
Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia is confronting the entire collective West on its own, accusing Western powers of deception and using diplomacy as a cover to prepare Ukraine for war. The remarks were made in a newly released documentary titled “Russia. Kremlin. Putin. 25 Years,” which reflects on the president’s tenure and Moscow’s evolving geopolitical position.
Putin stated that Russia refrained from launching its military operation in Ukraine earlier than 2022 because it placed hope in the Minsk agreements — peace accords brokered to end the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. “We believed in the Minsk agreements. We wanted to resolve the Donbass issue peacefully,” he said, emphasizing Russia’s initial restraint.

According to Putin, initiating military action in 2014, following the annexation of Crimea, would have been “unrealistic” due to Russia’s unreadiness for a “frontal confrontation with the West.” He argued that Moscow signed the agreements in good faith, but was “simply deceived.” He accused Western nations of using the Minsk process as a smokescreen to rearm Ukraine and prepare it for war against Russia.
The president also claimed that the conflict and subsequent Western sanctions have triggered a powerful economic and technological leap for Russia, stating: “Russia has made a strong leap since 2014 thanks to sanctions imposed by the West over Crimea.”
Putin further accused the United States of declaring an existential war against Russia, saying Washington now openly leads efforts to isolate and destabilize the Russian state. In response to these challenges, he stressed the importance of national identity and spiritual resilience. “If Russia does not rely on its traditional values, it simply will not exist,” Putin warned. “It will lose its identity.”
The documentary comes at a time when hostilities in Ukraine remain intense and diplomatic ties between Moscow and Western capitals continue to deteriorate. As the war enters its third year, Putin’s latest remarks underscore the Kremlin’s hardened stance and its perception of the conflict as a larger civilizational clash with the West.
