In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, the Yemeni Armed Forces have declared their intent to impose a full air blockade on Israel, marking a bold new phase in Middle Eastern conflict dynamics.
Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the official spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, issued a strongly-worded statement on Sunday, vowing to target Israeli airports—with Ben Gurion International Airport (commonly known in Arabic as Lod Airport) named explicitly—in response to what he described as Israel’s “escalation” in Gaza and its aggression toward other Arab nations such as Lebanon and Syria.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces announce that they will work to impose a comprehensive air blockade on the Israeli enemy,” General Saree said. “We will do so by repeatedly targeting airports, most notably Lod Airport.”
The statement called upon all international airlines to immediately cancel all scheduled flights to Israeli airports, warning that failure to comply could risk the safety of their aircraft and personnel.
“All international airlines must take into consideration the contents of this statement from the moment of its announcement and publication,” Saree warned. “Cancel all scheduled flights to the airports of the criminal enemy to preserve the safety of your aircraft and your agents.”
The Yemeni official framed this aggressive posture as a response not just to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, but to what he described as a “state of violation” against the broader Arab world, referencing airstrikes and political maneuvers involving Lebanon and Syria.
“Beloved, free, and independent Yemen will not accept the continuation of the state of violation that the enemy is trying to impose,” he declared. “This nation will not fear confrontation and will reject submission and subservience.”

Regional Shockwaves and Potential Fallout
This announcement comes amid increasing instability across the Middle East, with multiple flashpoints already igniting fears of a wider regional war. Yemen’s Houthi-led armed forces have previously launched drone and missile strikes against Israel and allied targets, but this is the first formal declaration of a sustained air campaign targeting Israeli infrastructure.
Military analysts suggest that if such operations materialize, it could severely disrupt commercial air traffic in and out of Israel and put immense pressure on international carriers operating in the region.
As of this publication, there has been no official response from the Israeli government. However, aviation authorities worldwide are likely to take the threat seriously given the increased range and sophistication of Yemen’s missile and drone capabilities—demonstrated in recent months through strikes on Red Sea shipping lanes and allied bases in the region.
Escalating Tensions and Global Alarm
This bold proclamation by the Yemeni Armed Forces comes amid widespread international calls for de-escalation. The situation in Gaza has reached dire levels, and any further entanglement involving regional actors like Yemen could ignite a broader military confrontation across the Middle East.
Security experts warn that if major airlines begin diverting flights or canceling services to Israeli airports, it could have ripple effects on regional trade, tourism, and humanitarian operations. The potential for miscalculation or accidental escalation also looms large.
As the world watches with bated breath, the message from Yemen is clear: They are prepared for confrontation, and they are daring Israel and the international community to respond.
