Burkina Faso’s Traoré Redefines Foreign Policy: “No More Masters, Only Partners”

1–2 minutes

In a bold geopolitical shift, Captain Ibrahim Traoré is steering Burkina Faso away from its historical dependence on Western powers—especially France—and forging new alliances based on mutual respect. Under his leadership, the country is embracing sovereignty-first policies that challenge the legacy of neocolonialism.

At the heart of Traoré’s approach is a new doctrine: “No more masters, only partners.” This has seen Burkina Faso strengthening ties with nations like Russia and Turkey, while severing military and diplomatic reliance on Western powers. The West has responded with criticism and suspicion. Notably, the US AFRICOM commander accused Traoré of using the country’s gold reserves to shield his government—an allegation that echoes past Western strategies used to undermine African leadership.

Since Traoré’s rise to power in 2022, there have reportedly been over 20 coup attempts, highlighting both the instability provoked by foreign interests and the deep divisions within the region. Yet, public support remains strong, with protests across Africa echoing the slogan: “Hands off Traoré!”

Drawing inspiration from Thomas Sankara, Traoré lives modestly on his army salary and champions African self-reliance. His leadership is emerging as a symbol of defiance against Western interference, reminiscent of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi before his ouster under NATO bombs.
