New Documentary Unmasks Israeli Soldier Who Killed Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

1–2 minutes

A powerful new documentary has unveiled the identity of the Israeli soldier who allegedly shot and killed veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during an Israeli raid in Jenin in 2022. Titled Who Killed Shireen?, the 40-minute investigative film by Washington-based media organization Zeteo was released on Thursday and names Alon Skajio as the sniper responsible for her death.

Al Jazeera’s Bisan Abu Kweik, featured in the documentary, revealed that Skajio was later killed in another Israeli raid in Jenin — the same city where Shireen lost her life. The documentary doesn’t just stop at identifying the shooter; it goes further to expose an alleged cover-up involving both Israel and the United States.

Executive producer Dion Nissenbaum disclosed that internal findings in Washington showed then-President Joe Biden privately believed the killing was intentional, but that conclusion was buried by political pressure. “We found some concerning evidence that both Israel and the Biden administration had covered up Shireen’s killing and allowed the soldier to get away without any accountability,” Nissenbaum stated.

On May 11, 2022, Shireen, wearing full PRESS gear, was fatally shot in the head by a high-velocity bullet while covering an Israeli raid. Her funeral, widely broadcast, was also violently disrupted by Israeli forces. A Palestinian investigation confirmed she was hit by a Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle, not random fire from Palestinian fighters as Israel had initially claimed.

Israel ultimately acknowledged there was a “strong possibility” their forces fired the shot — but only five months later and under intense scrutiny. They called it “accidental” and declined to take any disciplinary action.

Shireen, born in occupied East Jerusalem in 1971, was a respected voice for the voiceless. She earned her journalism degree from Yarmouk University in Jordan and joined Al Jazeera in 1997, dedicating her life to covering the Palestinian struggle.
