Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed their nations’ strategic partnership during a high-profile meeting in Moscow on May 8, 2025. The Chinese leader’s visit, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, included the signing of several cooperation agreements and sent a clear message of deepening unity between the two global powers.
“Our talks were warm, constructive, and productive,” Putin stated, referring to Xi as a “dear friend” during the ceremonial welcome. The visit marks Xi’s 11th official trip to Russia, underscoring what he called a “confident, stable, and resilient” relationship.
Xi, in turn, praised the historic ties between the two countries and said their growing alliance is a “natural continuation” of their shared past. He pledged to work with Russia in shaping a multipolar world in defiance of Western dominance, especially amid increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policies.
The Chinese president condemned “hegemonic bullying” on the world stage, clearly referencing U.S. actions, and called for global unity against unilateralism and power politics. He emphasized that both nations share a duty to uphold justice in international relations.
The visit effectively dismantled Washington’s hopes of drawing Moscow away from Beijing. In a direct nod to Chinese sovereignty, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s unwavering support for the one-China principle and rejected any attempts to promote Taiwan’s independence.
