NAIROBI – May 4, 2025
A 25-year-old Kenyan woman was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while attempting to smuggle 1.3 kilograms of cocaine to Goa, India, in what authorities say is part of a growing crackdown on international drug trafficking.
The suspect, Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi, was intercepted by detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit during a routine screening just before she boarded her outbound flight. Officers became suspicious of her luggage and conducted a thorough search.
According to police, two bags concealed within her suitcase contained a white powdery substance wrapped in yellow cellotape. Field tests confirmed the substance was cocaine.
“The narcotics were cleverly hidden, but our officers are alert and committed to ensuring Kenya is not used as a transit route for illegal drugs,” said a senior anti-narcotics official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Wanjiku is currently being held at the JKIA Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days. The drugs have been seized and secured as evidence as investigations continue.
Authorities emphasized that the arrest is part of intensified efforts to dismantle international drug syndicates using Kenyan airports as trafficking hubs. The Anti-Narcotics Unit has increased surveillance and intelligence-sharing with international partners to combat cross-border narcotics operations.
“We are sending a clear message: anyone attempting to traffic drugs through our borders will be caught and prosecuted,” a police spokesperson added.
Kenyan law enforcement agencies have warned that drug traffickers are increasingly targeting young individuals to act as couriers in exchange for cash, luring them into dangerous criminal networks.
