India and Pakistan on the Brink: Drone Strikes, Border Clashes, and Rising Fears of Full-Scale War

1–2 minutes

Tensions between India and Pakistan have spiraled dangerously out of control, with deadly exchanges of drone, artillery, and missile attacks raging for three consecutive days. The escalating conflict has already claimed more than four dozen lives, sparking fears of a wider military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

On Friday, India announced it had repelled overnight drone and artillery attacks from Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of using hundreds of Turkish-made drones in what it called a coordinated assault. In response, India launched a wave of retaliatory strikes, which it claims were directed at terrorist camps inside Pakistani territory.

Pakistan, however, has denied initiating the conflict, labeling India’s actions as reckless and accusing New Delhi of pushing the region to the edge of war. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan condemned India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, calling it “illegal and unilateral”, and appealed to the international community to intervene.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military spokesman Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry issued a stark warning, stating, “We will not de-escalate… They should take a hit.” He added that India would receive a “timely response” for the damage inflicted on Pakistan.

In Indian-controlled Kashmir, residents fled the Uri district as shelling damaged homes. Across border towns like Lahore and Amritsar, panic buying swept through markets, as citizens rushed to secure food and supplies amid the uncertainty.

India shut down 24 airports and suspended the Indian Premier League as precautionary measures. Schools on both sides of the Kashmir border were closed, affecting millions of students.

The crisis was triggered by India’s Wednesday strikes on what it described as terrorist camps in Pakistan—a response to a recent deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir. The conflict is now being described as the most severe confrontation between the two nations in decades.

Iran and other nations have urged restraint, but with rhetoric hardening on both sides, South Asia faces a potentially catastrophic conflict unless diplomacy intervenes fast.
