Jordan: 3 US Troops Killed and Dozen Injured in Drone Attack

2–3 minutes

In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, three US Army troops were killed and at least two dozen service members were injured in a drone attack overnight on a small US outpost in Jordan. This marks the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the region since the beginning of the Gaza war.

The attack occurred at Tower 22 in Jordan near the border with Syria, where US forces are stationed as part of an advise-and-assist mission with Jordan. US Central Command confirmed the incident, stating that a one-way drone attack impacted the base in northeast Jordan. The attack raises questions about the effectiveness of air defenses, as it is unclear why they failed to intercept the drone.

As of Friday, there had been over 158 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria. Although many of these attacks involved drones, rockets, and missiles, they were often described as unsuccessful, causing minimal injury or damage. The killing of three Americans at Tower 22 represents a worrisome escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, in a previously recorded interview with ABC News, emphasized the US goal of deterring further escalation and avoiding a broader conflict in the region. The Pentagon has consistently expressed its desire to prevent tensions from evolving into a regional war.

Despite the continuous attacks on US and coalition forces, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated last week that the Pentagon did not necessarily assess that Iranian proxies were increasing their attacks. However, the situation on the ground has become increasingly precarious.

The Pentagon has taken retaliatory actions against Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria, including recent strikes on facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah and other Iran-affiliated groups. The killing of three Americans comes amid ongoing talks between the US and Iraq about the future of the US military presence in the country.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by US forces in the Middle East and the complexity of the geopolitical landscape. With heightened tensions and a desire to avoid further escalation, the situation remains fragile, requiring careful diplomatic efforts to navigate the path forward.
